Make Revision at Home Successful and Easy - March 2025Written by - Sadie Wright

With exams approaching more rapidly, with only a little over a month before the first GCSE exam of the season, the creation of the Effective Home Learning Council is exactly what pupils and parents and carers need in this crucial stage of stepping up revision and staying on top of work. The Effective Home Learning Council, created by Mr Hall from our Maths Department, has collated all of the essential tips for not only parents and carers to aid in their child’s revision process, but the incredible students in the council have come together to advise their peers on what they can do to make the most out of their revision.

On Monday 17th March, Mr Hall, Mr Maughan and Mr Sheldon held a Parental Engagement Evening for Years 10 and 11 parents and carers to talk to them a little bit about the council, their aims, and what they can do to make revision easier for their children at home. As a year 12 pupil, I really struggled when learning to revise at home, and I know if this council existed during my GCSEs, it would have really helped me - So make the most of its resources!

The main goals of the council are to provide a toolkit to parents and carers to support their children at home, taking some responsibility in the roles they can play in aiding their children’s home learning. It is also to be able to provide resources to pupils that they can trial to learn how to revise, and learn what methods effectively help them. Working in the right learning environment at home, making a revision timetable, and trying different revision methods such as using flashcards are just a few ways that the council have advised pupils and parents and carers to make revision time at home as effective as possible. Parents and carers are urged to help their children wherever possible; even if it's creating an environment at home with no distractions, or asking a prompt question, like “What was the most important thing you learned in school today?”, it will greatly benefit your child’s revision.

Each resource and tip from the council have been taken from a mixture of experiences from pupils and what helped them and their revision, as well as experiences from being a teacher, and what teachers find have helped their students with revision and improving their grades. To bring all of this information together, the council is currently creating a website, with all of the key tips and tricks that pupils, parents and carers can use to make revision easier and more effective. This will contain assessment calendars, revision resources, and much more, so keep a lookout!

Good luck with your revision!
